2021 Open Access Week Theme: “It Matters How We Open Knowledge: Building Structural Equity”

This year’s theme aligns with the recently released UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science, of which Open Access is a crucial component. This year's Open Access Week will be held from October 25th through the 31st; however, organizers are encouraged to host discussions and take action around this year’s theme whenever is most suitable during the year and to adapt the theme and activities to their local context.

Major Open Access Collaboration between Brill and ERC Project ‘Open Philology: The Composition of Buddhist Scriptures’
 

We are proud to announce a new Open Access collaboration with ‘Open Philology: The Composition of Buddhist Scriptures’ (OpenPhilology), funded by the European Research Council. The resulting book series Buddhist Open Philology Project will publish translations of scriptures, text editions, and studies on the select corpus of Mahāyāna Buddhist scriptures (sūtra), the Mahāratnakūṭa collection of 49 sūtras. All volumes in the series will be published in Open Access. To the press release
 

 


Brill Signs Agreement with the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL) to Publish Open Access Series
 

We are delighted to have signed an agreement with the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL) to publish a new Open Access series. The series will be entitled Endangered and Lesser-Studied Languages and Dialects, and will publish up to three titles annually. It will be produced in close cooperation with scholars at the Linguistics Department of the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa.

Featured Article: “The effects of COVID-19 litter on animal life”

 

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is massively used, resulting in a new wave of litter: protective face masks and gloves. This article presents the first case of a fish entrapped in a medical glove, encountered during a canal clean-up in Leiden, The Netherlands. It also reports the first cases of birds using medical face masks as nesting material, which were also found in the Dutch canals.
