Part IV of Slavery and Anti-Slavery: A Transnational Archive compiles rare materials on emancipation in the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean, from Lord Dunmore’s late 18th-century proposal to the Plessy v. Ferguson decision in the 19th century.
The collection includes records of refugees, freedpersons, and the Freedmen’s Bureau, along with newspapers, legal and financial documents, diaries, letters, speeches, and plays. It highlights government efforts to protect freed slaves, post-Civil War challenges in the American South, abolitionist and suffrage movements, British and French documents on the slave trade, reports from the West Indies and Africa, and religious organizations' initiatives in education and healthcare for freedpersons.
